How to run VLSI CAD tools remotely in the ENCS general labs?

[Modified Friday, Jun 25th 2010 by saeed]

Note: If you plan to use the instruction below, with Secure Shell Client, to remotely log in our Solaris server to run Synopsys, Cadence, Mentor Graphics software, please be advised that:
- Synopsys software must be used within the same five (5) mile radius of the Hall Building.
- Cadence software must be used within a radius of one mile of the Hall Building
- Mentor Graphics software must be used in an educational classroom or laboratory in Concordia University

VLSI CAD tools are available on ECE Solaris servers. Thus, after logging in to 'login.encs.concordia.ca', you should direct to these ECE servers (like, Cavendish.ece, dea.ece...)

The instruction is similar to these steps.
- at step 2c, replace 'honesty.encs.concordia.ca' with ECE servers, like 'cavendish.ece.concordia.ca' or 'dea.ece.concordia.ca'
- at step 2d, depends on the tool, set appropriate environment parameters and type accordingly commands to run the tool.

Note:

To run Cadence tool remotely with Xming, Xming fonts need to be installed.
Otherwise, you will get errors like
"X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exit)"
or
"X connection to localhost:11.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)"
