Can I remotely access my ENCS network files?

[Modified Friday, Sep 25th 2015 by wmp]

For security reasons, telnet and ftp are disabled on the ENCS network. You should use SSH, SFTP or SCP instead. There are a number of free software applications available on the Internet, which can do SSH and SFTP. Here are three of them for Windows:

1. Putty (SSH client software):
PuTTY is a small piece of software. It can be downloaded from PuTTY Download Page.

2. WinSCP (for Windows):
WinSCP is an open source sftp and SCP (Secure Copy) client for Windows using SSH (Secure Shell). It can be used to copy files between a local and a remote computer. It can be downloaded from WinSCP Download Page.

How to transfer files from a Linux machine?

In this section, we will describe how to transfer files from a Linux desktop, by first connecting to Concordia's login server.

From the Fedora Start Menu, click on "f", navigate to "Places" and then select, "Connect to Server".

Fill in the required fields with the information given below:

Service type: SSH
Server: login.encs.concordia.ca
Port: 22
User Name: your ENCS_username

Click on "Connect", provide your password in the next screen and then once again, select "Connect".

You now have a secure connection to login.encs.concordia.ca. File transfer may begin.

Browse to the desired file(s)/folder(s). Make a selection, and simply drag and drop file(s)/folder(s) to your destination. You may also use the copy/paste functions.
