Why I don't see any desktop icons when I login into Linux?

[Modified Thursday, Jan 28th 2010 by Saeed]

Currently for ENCS machines, we have a couple of graphical displays. The two most popular are Gnome and KDE. After logging in, if you do not see any icons on desktop or an unfamiliar display, probably you are in a different setting environment.

At the Linux log in screen, enter your ENCS username and password. After then, at the right corner of the screen, click on 'Session Type', choose 'GNOME'. Then Enter.

This will bring you to the Gnome graphical display, which you may familiar with. The next log-in will remember your previous session choice.

Mainstream Linux distributions typically default to one of two desktop environments ,KDE or GNOME..
