1. Exit Firefox completely. All Firefox windows must be closed.

2. Go into your unix home directory, and get into your firefox directory
For example username is: sdesk28, it's /home/s/sdesk28/.mozilla/firefox/

[sd1] cd .mozilla/firefox/
[sd1] [/home/s/sdesk28/.mozilla/firefox] > ls
pluginreg.dat profiles.ini qbe9erju.default

"qbe9erju.default" Is the profile directory, so you descend into it

[sd1] [/home/s/sdesk28/.mozilla/firefox] > cd qbe9erju.default/
[sd1] [/home/s/sdesk28/.mozilla/firefox/qbe9erju.default] >
3. Open user.js in a text editor, in this case gedit.

[sd1] [/home/s/sdesk28/.mozilla/firefox/qbe9erju.default] > gedit ./user.js

4. Add the following line,

user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.mailto","/encs/bin/thunderbird");

5. Save the file. If it asks for a name, make sure that it's called "user.js" and that it is indeed in your profile directory.
