Storage Space for Faculty
As of August 22nd, 2012, full time faculty member benefit from an allocation of 300GB in file space in addition to their home directories.
This space is available on Unix NFS using (for example):
Unix path: /private/s/smith
or under Windows by mapping a share (for example):
Windows path: \\filer-facdisk\fac_s\smith
(Note that faculty members who currently have “leased” space as (e.g.) /private/smith will not be charged for it, but it will be merged into the 300GB allocation. Faculty members to whom this applies will be contacted separately concerning merging the diskspace.)
Faculty wishing to share this space with a student or other researcher can make a request to have the person added to the FACDISK group of the professor.
Access to the diskspace is based on group membership in a group called (for example) smith_FACDISK. By default only the professor himself/herself is a member of that group, and thus can use the entire quota. If a professor desires it, the space can be shared with students by adding students to the “*_FACDISK” group. Note that the professor has a subdirectory in this space for their private use, regardless of whether they choose to share the diskspace. They can create additional directories for sharing with group members, and directories can be created for the use of individual students.
Because this diskspace is slower than, and backed up less
thoroughly than, home directories, we recommend against using
it for e-mail folders.
